New Pokegama

Oregon

For a few years in the early nineteen hundreds, a small railroad town called New Pokegama stood here. It marked the end of the Klamath Lake Railroad, the line that ran up from Thrall, California. The first train reached this plateau in the early nineteen hundreds.

But the rails stopped here. From this point, freight and passengers had to be loaded onto wagons and stagecoaches and hauled overland the rest of the way to Klamath Falls. For a few years the town buzzed as a transfer point on the edge of the timber country. Then the railroad pushed onward and the wagon road lost its purpose, and New Pokegama faded. The Klamath County Historical Society placed a marker here to remember the vanished crossroads.
