Patrol Torpedo Boat PT-658
Oregon
Moored at Swan Island on the Willamette River is PT-six fifty-eight, one of only two fully operational World War Two patrol torpedo boats left in the United States. She is a seventy-eight-foot Higgins boat, built in New Orleans in nineteen forty-five, one of only thirty-six of her class ever constructed. She arrived too late to see combat, but she carries every lesson the Navy had learned from four years of Pacific warfare, including the latest armaments and hull modifications.
A nonprofit group, Save the PT Boat, spent roughly a decade restoring her to full working order, beginning in the nineteen nineties. She was added to the National Register of Historic Places in twenty twelve and is open to visitors several days each week.
