Talent: The Postmaster Who Became a Town

Near Ashland, Oregon

Aaron Patton Talent bought most of Jacob Wagner's land along Wagner Creek in the Rogue Valley and applied for a post office. He wanted to call it Wagner. Postal officials said no, and named the office after the new landowner instead, dropping one of the L's in the process.

A.P. Talent leaned into it: he surveyed parcels, opened a store, planted orchards, and served as postmaster.

When the railroad came through in the mid-eighteen eighties, the usual cluster of businesses followed. By nineteen ten the population had reached two hundred fifty, enough to incorporate. The town built a cannery, a box factory, three churches, and a two-story brick schoolhouse.

The Talent Irrigation District eventually brought water to the wider Rogue Valley, and the fruit orchards that A.P. Talent himself had planted became the economic engine of the region.
