Tumalo, Oregon
Oregon
The small community of Tumalo sits just north of Bend along the Deschutes River, and its name comes from a Klamath word believed to mean wild plum. Around nineteen oh four, an irrigation colonization company platted a townsite here and marketed it aggressively to settlers, promising that Deschutes River water would turn the high desert into productive farmland. Tumalo briefly boomed, with a post office, a church, and aspirations to become a significant Central Oregon town.
But the irrigation system proved less reliable than promised, the summers short and dry, and Bend, just a few miles south, captured most of the commercial traffic when the railroad arrived in nineteen eleven. Tumalo settled into the quiet role it holds today: a gateway community on the edge of the Deschutes River canyon, where the volcanic Cascades meet the high desert plateau.
