Abbottstown: Eastern Door of the Lincoln Highway

Near York, Pennsylvania

Abbottstown was laid out in seventeen fifty-three by John Abbott, the oldest borough in Adams County and a traveler's stop long before paved roads existed. The historic Altland House has long served travelers here as an inn and restaurant. When the Lincoln Highway was designated in nineteen thirteen as the nation's first coast-to-coast automobile route, Abbottstown sat along its route across Pennsylvania.

The highway continues west from here, winding through the Allegheny Mountains. Route Thirty follows King Street through the center of town almost exactly as the old wagon road once did. It is a quiet place, but for anyone driving the Lincoln Highway westward across Pennsylvania, Abbottstown is a worthwhile stop.
