Anthony Sadowski, Polish Pioneer
Near Reading, Pennsylvania
Anthony Sadowski arrived along the Schuylkill River around seventeen twelve, one of the earliest Polish settlers in colonial Pennsylvania. He built a life as a trader and frontier diplomat, learning native languages and earning enough trust from both the Provincial Government and local tribes to serve as a messenger and interpreter. In seventeen twenty-eight, colonial authorities sent him into delicate negotiations with Indian nations, work that required him to move between two worlds and speak with authority in both.
He lived on the Pennsylvania frontier for decades, a figure who bridged European settlement and indigenous diplomacy at a moment when that bridge was genuinely fragile. Sadowski died in seventeen thirty-six and was buried in the graveyard of Saint Gabriel's Church. A local tradition holds that the name of Sandusky, Ohio comes from his own, though French maps showed a similar name for Sandusky Bay as early as seventeen eighteen.
