Birthplace of George C. Marshall

Pennsylvania

George Catlett Marshall was born on this site on December thirty-first, eighteen eighty. He would become one of the most consequential American soldiers and statesmen of the twentieth century. As Army Chief of Staff from nineteen thirty-nine to nineteen forty-five, Marshall organized and led the largest military expansion in United States history.

He rose to General of the Army in December of nineteen forty-four. After the war, as Secretary of State, he authored the European Recovery Program, better known as the Marshall Plan, which rebuilt western Europe's shattered economies and reshaped the postwar world. For that achievement, he received the Nobel Peace Prize in nineteen fifty-three.

He later served as Secretary of Defense. Marshall died on October sixteenth, nineteen fifty-nine.
