Bob Hoffman: Father of World Weightlifting

Near York, Pennsylvania

York, Pennsylvania was an unlikely headquarters for an international sporting empire, but Bob Hoffman made it one. Hoffman founded the York Barbell Company on Broad Street in nineteen thirty-two, during the depths of the Depression, and built it into the dominant force in American strength sports for four decades. He coached United States Olympic weightlifting teams in the mid twentieth century, overseeing some of the most competitive Cold War-era lifting in history.

He actively developed powerlifting and bodybuilding as organized sports when they had almost no institutional support. He was a founding member of the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports. His Strength and Health magazine, published in York, reached a large readership and made lifting culturally respectable when it was still considered fringe.

He earned the title Father of World Weightlifting honestly.
