Bradford Oil Refinery

Pennsylvania

In eighteen eighty-one, three independent oilmen named Robert Childs, Eli Loomis, and William Willis founded a refinery near Bradford, Pennsylvania, starting with a capacity of just ten barrels a day. That modest beginning placed them among the earliest independent operators in an industry then dominated by Standard Oil. One hundred and twenty-five years later, that same refinery was processing more than nine thousand barrels of crude oil every single day, sourcing more than three million barrels annually from wells mostly within one hundred and twenty-five miles. It stands as one of the oldest refineries in continuous production in the United States, a rare thread of industrial continuity running from the frontier oil boom of the eighteen eighties straight through to the modern energy economy.
