Captain John Brady, Patriot and Frontier Soldier

Pennsylvania

Captain John Brady lived near this spot in the years before the Revolution, one of the most embattled stretches of Pennsylvania's frontier. He had already fought in the French and Indian War and the Pontiac War before the Revolution began. When it did, he served as a captain in the Continental Army and was wounded at the Battle of Brandywine in seventeen seventy-seven.

Brady survived that fight, only to meet a violent end in April of seventeen seventy-nine, when he was ambushed and killed near Muncy. His death came at a moment when the Susquehanna Valley was under sustained attack, and Brady had been one of its most determined defenders. The fort that bore his name stood just a short distance from here, near present-day Muncy.
