Charles Margiotti: Punxsutawney's Son at the Bar

Pennsylvania

Charles Margiotti was born in Punxsutawney in eighteen ninety-one, the son of Italian immigrants, and went on to become one of Pennsylvania's most prominent attorneys. Governor George Earle appointed him state Attorney General in nineteen thirty-five. Margiotti had already run for governor himself for the Republican nomination in nineteen thirty-four, a sign of how far a first-generation immigrant could rise in Pennsylvania politics.

He built a successful private practice in Pittsburgh while also donating legal services to defend immigrant workers who could not afford counsel. He is buried here at Calvary Cemetery in Punxsutawney, the same small town whose groundhog brings the world's cameras every February.
