Connie Mack: Grand Old Man of Baseball
Pennsylvania
Connie Mack spent fifty years managing the Philadelphia Athletics, a record no one has come close to matching. He started as a catcher in Connecticut in eighteen eighty-four, but it was in the dugout where he made history. From nineteen oh one through nineteen fifty, Mack guided the Athletics to nine American League pennants and five World Series championships.
In the very first Major League Baseball All-Star Game in nineteen thirty-three, he managed the American League to victory. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in nineteen thirty-seven. Near this spot on Cliveden Street is where he made his home, a quiet address for one of the most consequential figures the sport has ever produced.
