Crawford Grill: Pittsburgh's Jazz Cathedral
Near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
From the nineteen forties through the nineteen sixties, the Crawford Grill on Centre Avenue in Pittsburgh's Hill District was one of the great jazz clubs in America. This second location, Crawford Grill Number Two, opened in nineteen forty-three and was owned by William Gus Greenlee, a legendary Pittsburgh figure who also owned the Pittsburgh Crawfords baseball team. The club drew a racially mixed crowd, rare for the era, and the musicians who played here read like a list of jazz immortals: Art Blakey, Mary Lou Williams, John Coltrane, and many others.
It was the kind of room where music was serious business and every performance mattered. The Hill District at its peak was one of the most vital Black cultural communities in the United States, and the Crawford Grill was its beating heart.
