Dr. Anna Broomall: Pioneer of Prenatal Care
Near Wilmington, Pennsylvania
Dr. Anna Broomall lived near here, and her medical legacy touches nearly every maternity ward in the United States today. Born in eighteen forty-seven and trained at Woman's Medical College of Pennsylvania, she became one of the country's leading obstetricians at a time when women in medicine faced constant obstruction.
She established the first prenatal care clinic in the United States at Woman's Hospital, decades before the concept became standard practice. Her research on episiotomies and cesarean techniques directly reduced maternal and infant mortality. She also championed nursing education within the hospital setting, insisting that skilled nursing was inseparable from skilled medicine.
She died in nineteen thirty-one, but the protocols she pioneered, screening patients before birth rather than simply showing up for delivery, are now considered basic public health.
