Everett, Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania

Everett is the seat of Bedford County's commercial life, a small borough tucked into the Raystown Branch of the Juniata River valley. Settlement here dates to seventeen eighty-seven, when the land was laid out as a town. It later became known as Bloody Run, a name taken from a nearby creek where settlers and Native Americans fought.

A group of citizens persuaded the state to rename it Everett in eighteen seventy-three, reportedly after Edward Everett, the famous Massachusetts orator who shared the stage with Abraham Lincoln at Gettysburg. The borough incorporated in eighteen sixty under the name Bloody Run. Everett served as a supply stop on the old Lincoln Highway, the first coast-to-coast road in America, which passes directly through downtown.

A few original Lincoln Highway-era storefronts and gas station sites remain along the main street.
