Falkner Swamp Reformed Church, Founded 1725

Near Reading, Pennsylvania

The congregation gathered here on October fifteenth, seventeen twenty-five, for its first communion, making this one of the oldest German Reformed congregations in the United States. The service was led by the Reverend John Philip Boehm, a schoolteacher turned minister who became the founder of the German Reformed Church in America. Boehm had emigrated from the Rhineland and found German settlers scattered across Montgomery County with no ordained clergy to serve them.

He organized several congregations, but Falkner Swamp was his first and became the anchor of a denomination that would eventually evolve into the United Church of Christ. The present stone building dates to seventeen ninety and has stood here through nearly two and a half centuries of Pennsylvania history. The congregation has worshipped without interruption from colonial days to the present.
