Fountain Hill, Bethlehem Steel's Executive Enclave
Near Allentown, Pennsylvania
Fountain Hill sits just south of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, and it was incorporated as its own borough in eighteen ninety-three and it became a residential retreat for many of the executives and investors who ran Bethlehem Iron and then Bethlehem Steel, set apart from the men who worked for them. While thousands of immigrant laborers crowded into South Bethlehem row houses within walking distance of the furnaces, affluent investors and executives built their homes on Fountain Hill's elevated ground, with views across the Lehigh Valley. The division was written into the map.
The borough even developed its own cultural institutions, including the Fountain Hill Opera House and it became home to Saint Luke's Hospital, which moved there from South Bethlehem. Today Fountain Hill is less than one square mile, one of the smallest boroughs in Lehigh County, a residential remnant of the steel era's sharply stratified world.
