Foxburg Country Club: Golf's Oldest American Home

Pennsylvania

In eighteen eighty-four, a Pennsylvania man named Joseph Mickle Fox traveled to Scotland with a cricket club and came home with something unexpected: golf clubs, gutta-percha balls, and a new obsession. He had watched Tom Morris Sr. play at St. Andrews and been taught the swing on the spot.

Back in Foxburg, Fox played on his family's meadows until neighbors wanted in. In eighteen eighty-seven he donated land for a proper course, and the Foxburg Golf Club was born. That makes it the oldest golf course in continuous use in the United States, recognized by a Pennsylvania historical marker in nineteen fifty-five. The course expanded to nine holes in eighteen eighty-eight and has been swinging ever since, more than a century before golf became a household sport in America.
