George Croghan: Architect of the British Fur Empire
Near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania
In the seventeen forties, an Irish immigrant named George Croghan set up a trading post on this very site and began building one of the most ambitious commercial networks in colonial America. Starting here, Croghan extended his reach all the way into the French-controlled Ohio Country, exchanging European goods for furs that fetched high prices back in Europe. What made him exceptional was his method: he learned Native American languages and customs rather than simply demanding trade on British terms.
For roughly a quarter century he served as a key diplomatic broker between the British Crown and Indigenous nations, attending treaty conferences and negotiations that shaped the fate of the continent. His original trading post here was where it all began, on land that would eventually become the state of Pennsylvania.
