George Rosenkrans, Band Composer
Pennsylvania
For most of his life, George Rosenkrans called this small Pennsylvania community home. Born in eighteen eighty-one and living until nineteen fifty-five, he worked as the church organist here while quietly building one of the more prolific composing careers in American band music.
Rosenkrans wrote piano pieces, organ works, and hymns, but he was best known for his marching band numbers. He is credited with completing more than two hundred of them, including marches titled Triumphant Battalions and Our Glorious Flag. His work circulated through the regional band tradition of the early twentieth century, a time when small-town bands were a primary form of communal entertainment. He lived and created almost entirely within this corner of Clearfield County.
