George Spratt's Farm: Where the Wright Brothers Found a Key Answer
Near Intercourse, Pennsylvania
The flight at Kitty Hawk on December seventeenth, nineteen oh three, is the famous date. But some of the thinking that made it possible happened right here, on a farm in Chester County. George Spratt, born in eighteen seventy, was an aeronautical experimenter and a close collaborator of Wilbur and Orville Wright.
When the brothers' nineteen oh one glider underperformed badly, it was Spratt who helped them diagnose the problem. He also contributed a crucial methodological idea: measuring the lift and drag forces on a wing surface simultaneously, an insight that shaped the wing design of the nineteen oh three Flyer. The Wrights visited this farm in December of nineteen oh six, a sign of how much they valued Spratt's thinking.
History gave the credit to Dayton and Kitty Hawk. The contribution made in these fields rarely gets a headline.
