Governor John S. Fine
Pennsylvania
John S. Fine was born in Alden, Pennsylvania, in eighteen ninety-three and rose through the courts before being elected Governor of Pennsylvania in nineteen fifty. His inauguration was the first in Pennsylvania to be televised.
During his term, his administration instituted the state's first permanent sales tax, ended segregation in the Pennsylvania National Guard, and opened the State Police to African Americans. He also raised the state's national ranking in health care. Fine had served as both a county judge and a state judge before winning the governorship.
He was a graduate of Nanticoke High School and died in nineteen seventy-eight.
