Herman Herzog: A Thousand Landscapes
Pennsylvania
Herman Herzog arrived from Germany in the eighteen seventies and settled near Philadelphia, bringing with him a reputation that had been built in European salons and royal courts. He had been a celebrated landscape painter in his native country, his works collected by royalty across the continent, and he carried that sensibility into his adopted homeland. Painting with the Hudson River School, Herzog captured wild and unspoiled American landscapes across the country, producing more than one thousand canvases over his long career.
He won an award at the Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition in eighteen seventy-six. His home and studio stood near this location, and it was here that his son Lewis was also born. Herman Herzog lived to be ninety-nine years old, painting into advanced age.
His work now appears in major American museum collections, a record of nineteenth-century wilderness that has since vanished in many places he painted.
