Huffman Distillery and Chopping Mill
Pennsylvania
In Washington County, Pennsylvania, this stone-and-log distillery dates to around seventeen ninety, making it one of the oldest surviving commercial buildings in southwestern Pennsylvania. The site is a rare intact survivor from the era when this corner of the state was thick with small-scale distillers converting surplus grain into whiskey. That industry made the region a flashpoint in seventeen ninety-four, when farmers rebelled against the new federal excise tax on spirits in what became known as the Whiskey Rebellion.
Washington County was the heart of that uprising. The Huffman complex, which also includes a horse-powered chopping mill, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in nineteen ninety-two as one of the last physical witnesses to that volatile moment in early American history.
