Ida Ella Ruth Jones: Folk Artist of Chester County

Near Intercourse, Pennsylvania

Ida Ella Ruth Jones was born in Chester County in eighteen seventy-four, the daughter of a formerly enslaved man. She taught herself to paint and draw, and it was not until her seventies and eighties that her artistic output reached its full flowering: more than three hundred works in watercolor, oil, and pencil that recorded the rural world she had witnessed across her long life. Her paintings captured farm work and family life, landscapes and seasonal change, early machines, human interaction, and the living memory of slavery.

Working entirely outside the formal art world, Jones produced a body of folk art that now stands as a rare first-person document of Black rural life in early twentieth-century Pennsylvania. She lived and worked on a farm near this site until her death in nineteen fifty-nine, leaving behind a record of a world that might otherwise have gone unrecorded.
