Kuskusky Path — Native Highway Through Wexford
Near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
The road you are on follows ground that has been traveled for centuries. Trinity Lutheran Church sits beside a trace of the Kuskusky Path, one of the major Native American trails of western Pennsylvania. For much of the middle seventeen hundreds, hunters, traders, warriors, war captives, and diplomatic parties all moved along this route as part of a regional network connecting communities across the region.
The path linked Fort Duquesne, the French stronghold at the forks of the Ohio, with Kuskusky, a Delaware Indian community that sat where New Castle stands today. That connection made it a military corridor and a cultural lifeline. When Europeans began filtering into this valley, they built their first homes and churches right alongside the old path, as settlers so often did, following the routes indigenous people had surveyed long before them.
