Lightfoot Mill — A Colonial Grist Mill Still Standing

Pennsylvania

Built around seventeen forty-seven by Samuel Lightfoot, this water-powered grist mill ground grain for the surrounding community for more than two centuries. What makes it exceptional is its survival: the mill's horizontal counter-shaft power system, a transitional technology bridging earlier millwork and the emerging industrial age, remains essentially intact.

Most colonial mills were demolished, burned, or simply worn away. This one kept running until nineteen eighty-two. Today it is maintained by a preservation trust and holds National Historic Landmark status, one of the rarest designations in American historic preservation. Known formally as the Mill at Anselma, it stands as a rare, hands-on window into how early American communities fed themselves, and how mill technology evolved in the decades before steam power changed everything.
