Little Tulpehocken Church: Stoever's Lutheran Parish

Near Reading, Pennsylvania

Christ Little Tulpehocken Church is one of the oldest Lutheran congregations in Pennsylvania. Its congregation traces its origins to about seventeen twenty-nine, under the Reverend John Caspar Stoever Jr., a German-born minister who traveled on horseback across central Pennsylvania establishing churches and keeping meticulous parish records beginning in seventeen thirty.

A log church stood here before seventeen forty-nine. It was replaced by the current stone building in eighteen oh nine. Since eighteen fifty-three, the congregation has shared the site with Reformed worshippers, two traditions holding services in the same building across different generations.

The Tulpehocken Valley was settled heavily by German immigrants in the early seventeen hundreds, and churches like this one anchored those communities, providing not just worship but the record-keeping, community identity, and social structure that immigrant families depended on.
