Molly Pitcher's Carlisle

Near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania

Mary Ludwig Hays came from this corner of Pennsylvania and became the woman history remembers as Molly Pitcher. On June twenty-eighth, seventeen seventy-eight, at the Battle of Monmouth in sweltering heat that pushed toward one hundred degrees, she carried pitchers of water to exhausted artillerymen. When her husband William collapsed at his cannon from heat or injury, Mary stepped in to swab and load the gun herself.

George Washington later commended her. Scholars note that no single eyewitness account confirms every detail of the legend, but Pennsylvania recognized her service in eighteen twenty-two with an annual pension of forty dollars. She lived out her life in Carlisle, and her grave marker stands here today.
