Mother Theresa Maxis Duchemin: First American-Born Black Catholic Nun

Pennsylvania

Few lives in American Catholic history were as pioneering, or as difficult, as that of Theresa Maxis Duchemin. Born in eighteen ten, she became the first American-born African American Catholic nun in the nation and a charter member of the Oblate Sisters of Providence, the first congregation of religious women of color in the world, founded in Baltimore in eighteen twenty-nine. In eighteen forty-five she co-founded the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in Michigan, a congregation that still exists today.

Later, at the request of Philadelphia's Bishop John Neumann, she came to Susquehanna County and established an IHM community here, along with Laurel Hill Academy, which educated young women in this rural region until nineteen twenty-three. Her legacy spans two congregations and a century of Catholic education, yet her name remains little known outside religious history.
