Old Haverford Friends Meeting

Pennsylvania

You are passing one of the oldest Quaker meeting sites in America. Friends have gathered here in Haverford since sixteen eighty-four, just two years after William Penn himself arrived in Pennsylvania. The state marker records that Penn worshipped on this exact ground in the eleventh month of sixteen ninety-nine, pausing to join his fellow Friends in the plain wooden meeting house that stood here.

The structure you can see today replaced that original log building. Its older section was constructed in seventeen hundred as an addition, and it has been remodeled and enlarged over the centuries. But the community it anchors has remained continuous for more than three hundred years. For Quakers, this place was never just a building. It was the living center of a congregation that shaped the moral life of early Pennsylvania, from abolition efforts to peaceful relations with the Lenape people.
