Penn State Fruit Lab: Where Pest Control Went Global
Pennsylvania
Tucked into the South Mountain country of Adams County, the Penn State Fruit Research and Extension Center has been quietly reshaping how the world grows apples and peaches for generations. Pennsylvania fruit growers faced mounting disease and pest challenges in the early twentieth century, and the Commonwealth established this station to find answers. Over the decades the center expanded its reach considerably.
The program's integrated pest management protocols, developed here over decades, replaced calendar-based spraying with ecological monitoring, slashing chemical use and production costs. Those methods have since been adopted by orchardists well beyond Pennsylvania. What began as a fix for local growers became a global template for sustainable fruit production.
