Philadelphia Quartermaster Depot

Pennsylvania

The Schuykill Arsenal, later called the Philadelphia Quartermaster Depot, supplied the United States Army with clothing and equipment for nearly one hundred fifty years. Founded in seventeen ninety-nine, it stitched uniforms for soldiers in every American war from the War of eighteen twelve through the Second World War. At its World War Two peak, the depot employed thousands of workers, mostly women, pressing out millions of yards of khaki and olive drab. The original arsenal site closed and was razed in nineteen sixty-three, but the depot's work moved to Oregon Avenue, where eleven Art Deco brick buildings, built between nineteen thirty-nine and nineteen forty-two, still stand as a record of federal architecture of that era.
