Reverend John McMillan, Pioneer Preacher of the Western Frontier
Near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Buried in this churchyard is the Reverend John McMillan, born November eleventh, seventeen fifty-two, and a defining force on Pennsylvania's western frontier for nearly six decades. McMillan arrived in the region before statehood, when settlements west of the Alleghenies were raw and dangerous, and he spent his entire ministry here. He was not only a preacher but an institution-builder: he helped found Jefferson College and the Western Theological Seminary.
His missionary travels planted Chartiers, Pigeon Creek, and numerous other Presbyterian congregations across southwestern Pennsylvania. His wife shared every hardship of frontier life alongside him. When he died in eighteen thirty-three at eighty-one years old, he had served nearly sixty years in the ministry and left a network of churches and schools that shaped the region's intellectual and religious character for generations.
