Sachs Covered Bridge: Both Armies Crossed Here
Pennsylvania
Just southeast of here, spanning Marsh Creek, stands one of Adams County's oldest covered bridges. David Stoner built the Sachs Covered Bridge around eighteen fifty-two, using the lattice truss design patented by Connecticut architect Ithiel Town. The bridge extends one hundred feet across the creek.
In the summer of eighteen sixty-three, both Union and Confederate soldiers crossed this bridge during the Gettysburg Campaign, making it one of the few structures in the county used by armies on both sides. After being closed to automobiles in nineteen sixty-eight, the bridge suffered flood damage in nineteen ninety-six but was fully restored by Adams County. It still stands, one of the most visited historic bridges in Pennsylvania.
