Scotland School for Veterans' Children
Pennsylvania
For more than a century, this campus in south-central Pennsylvania served the children of military veterans. Founded in eighteen ninety-five as the Pennsylvania Soldiers' Orphans Industrial School, the state-run institution gave primary and secondary education to thousands of boys and girls over its lifetime, boarding them here in a residential setting steeped in patriotism.
Students competed in academics and athletics, and many graduates carried that military culture forward into careers in uniform. The school quietly closed in two thousand nine after more than one hundred years of service, leaving behind a legacy of discipline, sacrifice, and the particular American tradition of caring for the children of those who served.
