Sheppton Mine Rescue

Pennsylvania

On August thirteenth, nineteen sixty-three, a coal mine roof collapsed near here, trapping three miners about three hundred feet underground. For nearly two weeks the nation watched as rescuers tried to reach David Fellin and Henry Throne. The third man, Louis Bova, was never reached.

The breakthrough came when engineers drilled a narrow borehole straight down to the trapped men, wide enough to lower food, water, and communication gear while they widened a second hole for escape. After two weeks underground, both men were brought up alive. The technique was not experimental theater. It was one of the first rescues to raise trapped miners through holes drilled from the surface, an approach that later rescues, including Quecreek in Pennsylvania in two thousand two and the Chile mine rescue of two thousand ten, built on. What was improvised here out of desperation helped point the way for rescues in the decades that followed.
