Stan Musial, Born in Donora
Near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Stan Musial was born on Sixth Street in Donora in nineteen twenty, the son of a Polish immigrant laborer. As a boy he trained in gymnastics at the Polish Falcons club and played baseball on the local zinc mill men's team, two details that hint at the unusual combination of flexibility and power he would bring to the plate.
Musial spent his entire career with the Saint Louis Cardinals, from nineteen forty-one to nineteen sixty-three, and became one of the greatest hitters the game has ever seen. He retired with three thousand six hundred thirty hits, four hundred seventy-five home runs, a career batting average of three thirty-one, three Most Valuable Player awards, seven batting titles, and three World Series rings. He served in the Navy during World War Two and was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in nineteen sixty-nine.
