Stiegel-Coleman House
Near Intercourse, Pennsylvania
The Stiegel-Coleman House in Manheim, Lancaster County, was built around seventeen fifty-seven by Henry William Stiegel, a German immigrant who arrived in Philadelphia in seventeen fifty and became one of colonial America's most flamboyant industrial entrepreneurs. Stiegel built ironworks, then turned to glassmaking, founding the American Flint Glass Manufactory in Manheim in seventeen sixty-five. His colored and engraved glassware was so prized that it was later called simply Stiegel glass.
He traveled between properties by cannon-fire announcement and kept a personal band. He also went spectacularly bankrupt and spent time in debtors' prison. The house survives as a rare pre-Revolutionary domestic structure in Lancaster County and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
