Susquehannock Village at Lemoyne

Near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania

Beneath the streets of Lemoyne lies evidence of a world that preceded European settlement by centuries. Archaeological excavations uncovered a palisaded Susquehannock village near this spot, dating to the early sixteen hundreds. The Susquehannock were a powerful Iroquoian-speaking people who controlled this stretch of the Susquehanna River.

Among the artifacts recovered were fragments of iron, brass, and glass beads, suggesting that this community already had access to European trade goods, possibly through Dutch traders or people connected to the early English settlement at Jamestown, Virginia. The finds have given researchers a much clearer picture of Susquehannock settlement patterns and village life in the years just before sustained European contact changed everything.
