Union Forge

Pennsylvania

Just off this road sat Union Forge, an iron-working operation in early Pennsylvania. Curtis Grubb, who was connected to the famous Cornwall Iron Furnace nearby, started the forge in the late seventeen hundreds. The forge did something Cornwall could not: it took brittle pig iron and hammered it into workable wrought iron, the kind you could bend, shape, and nail.

The property included a grist mill, blacksmith and carpenter shops, and housing for workers. Under a succession of owners the forge kept its fires burning for decades, finally going quiet in the nineteenth century, by which time modern rolling mills had made the old charcoal forge obsolete.
