Veterans Stadium: The Vet
Pennsylvania
Veterans Stadium, known to Philadelphians simply as the Vet, opened in nineteen seventy-one and served as the shared home of the Philadelphia Phillies and the Philadelphia Eagles for over three decades. In its lifetime it hosted three World Series, in nineteen eighty, nineteen eighty-three, and nineteen ninety-three, plus two Major League Baseball All-Star Games and two National Football Conference Championship games. Seventeen Army-Navy football games were played on its artificial turf.
At its peak it seated more than sixty-five thousand fans. The Vet was not beautiful by most accounts, and it aged hard, but it was the backdrop for some of the most celebrated moments in Philadelphia sports history. The stadium was demolished in two thousand four.
