Westmoreland Museum of American Art

Pennsylvania

The Westmoreland Museum of American Art in Greensburg is one of the quietly serious art museums in western Pennsylvania. It grew from the bequest of Mary Marchand Woods, a Greensburg resident who handed her entire estate to what became the Woods Marchand Foundation in nineteen forty-nine. The museum opened its doors in May of nineteen fifty-nine and has focused from the start on American art, with particular depth in the artists who worked in and around southwestern Pennsylvania.

Today its collection holds thousands of objects, ranging from colonial portraits to twentieth-century paintings. For a mid-size regional town, that focus on place-rooted American art gives the museum a distinct identity worth a stop.
