William Chester Ruth: Inventor of the Baler Feeder

Near Intercourse, Pennsylvania

In the early nineteen twenties, an African American craftsman named William Chester Ruth opened a blacksmith and machine shop here, doing metal work and repairs primarily for the Pennsylvania German farming community. Ruth was a skilled inventor, and in the nineteen twenties he secured a patent for his baler feeder, a device that improved how hay was fed into baling machines and made the harvesting process significantly more efficient for farmers across the region. He also applied his mechanical talents to designing military devices.

Beyond the workshop, Ruth was a respected community leader in Ercildoun, serving as a spiritual leader at the Church of Christ. Born in eighteen eighty-two and living until nineteen seventy-one, he spent nearly five decades quietly advancing agricultural technology, earning recognition both as an inventor and as a pillar of his community.
