Wilt Chamberlain: The Hundred-Point Man

Pennsylvania

Philadelphia gave the world Wilt Chamberlain, a basketball player whose records have never been equaled. Born here in nineteen thirty-six, Chamberlain first drew national attention at Overbrook High School in West Philadelphia and then at the University of Kansas before turning professional. Over a career spanning from nineteen fifty-eight to nineteen seventy-three, he played for the Harlem Globetrotters, the Philadelphia Warriors, the Philadelphia Seventy-Sixers, and the Los Angeles Lakers.

He was a dominant force at center, setting records for both scoring and rebounding that still stand. On March second, nineteen sixty-two, playing for the Warriors against the New York Knicks in Hershey, Pennsylvania, Chamberlain scored one hundred points in a single game, a record no professional player has come close to matching. He was named Most Valuable Player four times and was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame.

He died in nineteen ninety-nine.
