Coventry: Nathanael Greene's Birthplace
Near Providence, Rhode Island
Coventry was incorporated in seventeen forty-one, taking its name from the English city in Warwickshire. It is best known as the home of Nathanael Greene, who was born in seventeen forty-two in Potowomut, part of Warwick, and later ran the family forge here. Greene grew up working in his family's iron forge before emerging as one of the most capable generals of the American Revolution, eventually commanding the Southern Campaign that drained British forces from the Carolinas.
His later home here, the Nathanael Greene Homestead, still stands as a museum. Coventry stretches across nearly sixty square miles, making it the second-largest town by area in Rhode Island, though most of it remains rural woodland, a quiet counterpart to its famous son's outsized role in founding the country.
