Dacotah Prairie Museum
Near Aberdeen, South Dakota
The Dacotah Prairie Museum on Aberdeen's Main Street serves as the institutional memory of Brown County, holding more than thirty thousand objects related to the natural and human history of the Northern Plains. Opened in nineteen seventy, it has grown to encompass Dakota and Lakota cultural materials, homestead-era farm equipment, and natural history collections including fossils from the Cretaceous inland sea that covered this landscape roughly eighty million years ago.
The museum is free and open to the public, which matters in a region where cultural infrastructure is spread thin across large distances. Its Loisell Gallery hosts rotating exhibitions, and its permanent galleries track the full arc from pre-contact Indigenous life through the railroad era to the present agricultural economy.
