Presentation College: Founded by the Sisters on the Prairie

Near Aberdeen, South Dakota

In eighteen eighty-six, five years after Aberdeen's founding, the Sisters of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary arrived from County Galway, Ireland, to staff a Catholic school on the Northern Plains. They came with almost nothing and built something that served the region for generations.

Presentation College grew from that original mission school into a fully accredited four-year institution focused on health care and business programs. Its nursing and allied health graduates have staffed hospitals across South Dakota for generations. The campus on Aberdeen's north side closed in twenty twenty-three, after more than seventy years.

The college's trajectory mirrors Aberdeen's: founded in the railroad boom, tested by drought and depression, sustained by the stubborn conviction that the northern prairie needed an educated workforce whether the weather cooperated or not.
