World's Largest Pheasant

South Dakota

Perched on a rise at the edge of Huron stands a towering pheasant of fiberglass and steel. The ring necked pheasant is South Dakota's pride, and in the late nineteen forties and fifties, as hunting and lost habitat thinned the flocks, the local Jaycees decided to celebrate the bird in a way nobody could miss. A sculptor built it, and it was dedicated before a crowd in the years that followed.

In an era when the world's largest anything could put a small town on the map, the giant bird did exactly that. Kept up by the community over the years, it still greets travelers on the highway today.
