Cornersville: Where Four Counties Meet

Tennessee

Cornersville has one of Tennessee's most self-explanatory names. The town was first settled in eighteen oh seven by John Haynes, surveyed and platted in eighteen twenty-seven under the name Marathon, then established under the name Cornersville by the legislature in eighteen thirty. The name honored its position near the point where the boundary lines of Giles, Maury, Bedford, and Lincoln Counties once converged.

Marshall County was not yet formed; when it was established in eighteen thirty-six, and again when lines were redrawn in eighteen seventy, Cornersville found itself shuffled between jurisdictions. It ended up in Marshall County's Cornersville District. Four county lines, three names, two centuries: a small Tennessee town whose whole history is geography.
